Normal Labs But Still Feel Off? Here’s What Your Doctor Isn’t Telling You

You’re tired all the time. Your brain feels foggy. You’re gaining weight—even though nothing has changed. You’re unmotivated, your workouts don’t feel the same, and your sex drive? Nonexistent.

So you go to your doctor. You run some labs.

And you get told: “Everything looks fine.”

But here’s the thing: you don’t feel fine.

And you’re not crazy. You’ve just been given incomplete information.

The Problem With “Normal” Labs

Most conventional labs are based on population averages—not optimal ranges. So if you’re within the statistical bell curve (even if you’re exhausted and miserable), your results get stamped as “normal.”

But symptoms don’t lie.

Your body’s trying to tell you something.

What Your Doctor Probably Didn’t Test (But Should)

Here’s what I look at in my practice when someone says they feel off but their labs are “normal”:

1. Free T3 and Reverse T3

TSH alone doesn’t tell the full thyroid story. Free T3 is your active thyroid hormone—if it’s low, your metabolism suffers. Reverse T3 can block T3, even if levels look okay.

2. DHEA-S

Your stress adaptation and hormone reserve. Chronically low DHEA can lead to burnout, fatigue, and poor hormone production across the board.

3. Free & Total Testosterone

Total T might look “fine” on paper—but if your free testosterone is low, your mood, drive, muscle, and energy all take a hit.

4. Estradiol + Progesterone (for women)

These impact everything from sleep and mental clarity to mood stability and weight regulation. Imbalances are often missed if you’re only checking one or the other—or testing at the wrong time in your cycle.

5. Cortisol (AM or 4-point saliva)

Your stress hormone. Low morning cortisol? You feel wired but tired. High nighttime cortisol? You can’t fall asleep. Either way, you’re drained.

6. SHBG (Sex Hormone Binding Globulin)

Too high or too low, and your hormones become unusable—even if total levels are technically “normal.”

Your Symptoms Are the Signal

If you’re struggling but keep being told everything is “fine,” it’s time for a deeper look.

You deserve more than a 10-minute visit and a lab printout with no answers.

You deserve someone who actually listens—and tests what matters.
